In this country, window box gardening offers apartment dwellers the enjoyment of container gardening from within or without. If you live in just one room or on a very small property, you, too, can have a window box garden filled in spring with pansies and primroses, in summer with petunias or fuchsias, and in fall with chrysanthemums. In winter, greens and berries, like bittersweet or California pepper berries with pine, give color. English Ivy will provide trailing green all winter if kept out of the wind.

For the best results in a window box gardens, the box ought to be at least three to four feet long but not more than six feet. If larger, it is way too heavy to suspend and secure properly, and it cannot be lifted easily, even by two people. Boxes resting on broad window ledges and on firm porch railings might be eight feet long, but hardly more since moving them becomes too hazardous. Keep to a minimum depth of eight to nine inches, with a width of ten to twelve inches across the top. Of course, lengths must vary according to the window, or series of windows or railing to be decorated with window box gardening.

The most common material for window box gardens is wood. California redwood becomes a neutral gray if not painted, and cypress will last for years. Cedar is recommended, as is a good grade of white pine. Other materials include metals, which are attractive and, for the most part, light in weight. However, they have the disadvantage of conducting heat, thus overheating the soil in your window box garden. Other suitable and durable lightweight materials are plastic, fiberglass, spun glass, and Gardenglas.

If you are handy with tools, you can make your own window boxes of wood, following instructions in pamphlets from your nursery or garden center. Whatever plan you follow, get boards one to one and a quarter inches thick. (Thinner boards will warp and offer little insulation against summer heat.) To fasten, rely on brass screws rather than nails, which in a few years may push out and cause a box to fall apart. To make corners secure, reinforce with angle irons. Be sure to provide enough drainage holes in the bottom for water to pass through freely. Space half-inch holes six to eight inches apart when building your window box gardens.

When boxes are completed, treat the insides with a preservative to prevent rotting. Cuprinol or some other non-toxic material is excellent, but avoid creosote which is poisonous to plants. After the preservative has dried, apply at least two coats of good paint or stain.

Select a color which will not detract from the plants. Traditional dark green is satisfactory, though commonplace, unless you use a tint like apple green. Have in mind the colors of the flowers, especially of plants that trail over the sides. Dark flowers do not show up against dark paint. The same is true of white flowers against light surfaces, as white petunias against white or pale yellow boxes.

To hold window box gardens securely, use bolts or lag screws and treat them beforehand to prevent rusting. Leave an inch or so of space between the window box garden and house for the movement of air. If the box garden is to rest on a terrace or other solid surface, raise them on cleats or set up on bricks or blocks of wood so drainage holes won’t become clogged. Some space under boxes is also important for air circulation, which will dry up run-off water.

When you plant a window box garden, put an inch layer of broken flower pots, crushed brick, small stones or pebbles over the bottom to enable water to escape freely through the openings. Above this, spread a piece of wet burlap or a layer of moist sphagnum moss, old leaves, hard coal clinkers or cinders to prevent soil from washing into the drainage area.

All plants in window box gardening need rich soil for luxuriant growth. Space larger kinds—geraniums, coleus, and fuchsias-eight to ten inches apart; smaller kinds—lobelias, annual phlox, wax begonias, sweet alyssum, and browallia—six inches apart. An eight-inch-wide box accommodates two rows of plants, with the tall ones in back and the low ones along the front. Boxes, ten inches wide, take three rows of plants, tall, medium, and low for edging.

After planting, spread an inch mulch of peat moss or other mulch over the soil to delay drying out and keep weeds in check. In a month, give a liquid fertilizer and follow up with feedings every seven to ten days. Foliage fertilizers can also be applied, but only as a supplement to root feeding.

The choice of plants for window box gardens is limited only by size. Plants over a foot high do not look well unless boxes are exceptionally large. Otherwise, you can grow almost anything you want. For early spring, you might start with Dutch flower bulbs. In cold regions, these can be purchased already grown, or you can raise your own.

Try hyacinths with pansies or early tulips or daffodils interplanted with grape hyacinths, or basket-of-gold and arabis with scillas, chionodoxas, or leucojum. Include some English daisies and sweet-smelling wall flowers, so common in window box gardening in Western Europe. Violas, blue phlox, aubretia, and forget-me-nots are other possibilities.

The favorite plant in window box gardening is the geranium—red or pink for white, cream, or light or dark blue boxes; white for brown, blue, or red boxes. The familiar trailing variegated vinca is excellent with them. Thriving in sun or shade, the vinca needs constant pinching to prevent it from becoming too long. English and German ivies are other trailers for sun or shade. In the sun, low annuals, dwarf marigolds, lobelias and verbenas make nice edgings as does sweet alyssum, in white, purple or lavender. Petunias vie with geraniums in popularity, and any kind can be planted, though the balcony types have the advantage of trailing gracefully over the sides of the window box garden.

In shade that is open to the sky, as on the north side of a house, coleus grows superbly, with white-and-green kinds a handsome contrast for those with red-and-pink leaves. Coleus luxuriates in a rich soil and requires plenty of moisture. Pinch to keep bushy, and to improve appearance remove the spiked blue flowers, unless you especially like them. The Trailing Queen coleus is one of the best.

Other shade-tolerant trailing plants include English ivy and its varieties, creeping jenny, Kenilworth ivy, creeping fig, German ivy, variegated gill-over-the-ground, myrtle, wandering Jew, zebrina, achimenes, chlorophytum, star of Bethlehem or Italian bellflower, and strawberry begonia.

These are just a few hints on planting your window box gardens. Be creative with colors and texture. Window box gardening, so much like container gardening, will become your next favorite hobby.

Happy Window Box Gardening!

Over the last 3-4 years Boxing’s mantle as the number one ‘fight’ sport has come under serious threat from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and in particular the Dana White lead Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Ultra slick presentations, clever marketing and the ability to produce the fights which fans yearn to see, has seen the UFC explode in the United States. The phenomenon is now actively spreading across Canada, Europe and the rest of the World. States and countries who once banned MMA events as ‘too brutal’ are now openly promoting them in their top stadia and venues. The UFC Events always have sell-out crowds regardless of the venue enormity, and this has continued as the bandwagon has spread to countries such as the UK and Ireland. Other MMA Organisations, such as Pride (Japan) and Affliction also gain huge crowds for their events. All this is occurring against the back-drop of a global recession!

On the other hand, Boxing has been a mainstream populous sport for in excess on 100 years. Legends such as Muhammed Ali, Marvellous Marvin Hagler, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson (to name a few) are household names amongst most people from both sides of the Atlantic. Boxing, celebrity and glamour have gone ‘hand in hand’ for decades. Watch re-runs of Mike Tyson fights from the 90’s on YouTube and try and spot the non-celebrities ringside - it’s very difficult! With such celebrity links comes huge revenues - something which top-level fighters have, in many instances, capitalised upon to become extremely wealthy, along with their promoters. However, this vast influx of celebrity and wealth appears to have come at a costly price for the noble art of boxing. With such money and prestige available to ‘World Champion’s’, every promoter wanted a champ. This has led to the increased number of weight divisions (very small variance between the weights) and most damagingly the introduction of the numerous ‘alphabet’ World Titles. The original and respected boxing organisations such as the WBC, WBA, IBF have dramatically swelled with the forming of the WBO and IBO, followed by such non-entity belts as the WBU. All this has led to numerous World Champions at each weight class. Whilst it is now commonly acknowledged that it is the fighter who ‘makes the belt’ (The Ring Belt is ultimately decided upon in this way), the reluctance of organisations to interlink means many ‘top’ fights never occur. Combine this with the reluctance of promoters / fighters to risk their status as ‘World Champ’ for anything less that an ‘out of this world payday’ and you the present scenario.

Whilst there are always exceptions to the rule, as Ricky Hatton and PBF recently proved, it is too often the case that the best fighters don’t ever meet in the ring. This is not the case in MMA, where every event seems to provide at least one fight between a weight divisions top two. There are also less weight divisions, and, unlike boxing, there never seems to be a mis-match simply to ‘pad’ a fighter’s record. The glamour / celebrity side of the sports is also turning in MMA’s favour (and that’s not referring to Tito Ortiz’s partner!). Celebrities such as Paris Hilton are common place at UFC events, Donald Trump actively promotes events in his venues whilst the Goldenboy of Boxing, Oscar Del Hoya, was recently ecstatically cheering ringside at the Affliction main event of Fedor v Arloski (he had a business interest in that event).

It appears that MMA is clearly challenging Boxing’s supremacy like it has never been challenged before. Many fans suggest the sports are as different as Football is to Rugby, but their audience catchment groups most definitely overlap. If MMA, and the UFC in particular, continue to ‘run their business’ and improve as they have in recent years they have a big future. They should take a cautious note of what has happened to boxing in recent years and learn from their mistakes. On a ‘flip-side’, maybe boxing and it’s bosses should ‘go-back to basics’, benchmark the MMA success formula and re-invent their brand accordingly. Only time will tell.

My background is very sport and fitness orinetated, not in my profession but in my lifestyle. I have been a keen sports player since I was ‘knee high to a grasshopper’ and a gym member since college. However, I honestly believe I have never felt fitter than I do at present, at the age of 32 years, 4 months and 8 days! My favourite sports include football, boxing and MMA.

I have recently become involved in http://www.competitiveurge.com/ , a social networking site with a difference - it actively encourages and promotes physical participation. Whilst the site is only in it’s infancy in terms of functionality and useability, I believe in the concept 100% and am extremely excited by the future plans for it. Hope you enjoy.

Popular Box Sets

Box sets have become extremely popular since the time of their introduction to the market. Box sets are best when you consider having the collection of your favorite artist, movies, television programs or even books of high significance by renowned authors. In general a box set typically is a collection of diverse musical recordings, movies, television shows, or other collection of related items that are contained in a set of CD’s or DVD’s that are presented in a box. Of the various box sets available in the market the musical box set contains three or more CD’s (and DVD’s as well) covering a broad range of the music of a given artist or genre. Generally the musical box sets contain artists and bands with a long and successful career with anthology or essential collections of their music. Musical box sets often include rare and unreleased tracks of the artists that add more value to it. The musical box sets are in fact most popular box sets.

The popularity is closely followed by the popular movies, television programs or sports broadcasts that are available in the form of box sets. These kinds of box sets can very well include an entire season of a television program, movies from a particular director/actor, movies related to a particular theme, or films of series such as Star Wars. Box sets are quite popular as a compilation of different musical recordings, movies, television shows, or other collection of related items that are contained in a box. That is why you can find your favorite movie, music or even books in a CD or DVD box sets. There are many popular programs that you can find on the box sets.

The price of the popular box sets can vary according to the number of discs, contents, artist, compilation of songs and many other such aspects. Popularity of the box sets definitely depends on the precious collection of music, videos or films, or even books that are one of its kinds. When you buy a popular box set, it means that you have in your hands the best of a genre and it is therefore wise to take care of this valuable possession. Most of the box sets come in a protective case or box meant to keep the CD’s or DVD’s in a proper condition. It is therefore advisable never to loose these cases as CD’s or DVD’s without them can get scratches and can catch dust. However, if you somehow loose these cases or boxes, immediately shift the box set CD’s or DVD’s into a CD pouch meant to keep them in proper order and condition. Always keep the box set and its content away from heat, magnets and direct sunlight. All these elements can ruin your favorite possession. Once you take care of your box sets, time and again you can have the best results from it.

If you’re not already internet savvy, shopping online for MMA Clothing and Fight Gear can be an overwhelming process. Fortunately though, it doesn’t have to be. I have written this guide to help ease you through the process of selecting the right online MMA retailer to shop with the first time, so that your online shopping experience is a good one.

Product Choose an online store with a wide selection of product. If you’re like me, you don’t want to have to shop at three different online stores to find everything that you want. I like to pick a major retailer (or two maximum) and stick with them throughout the purchasing process.

Price Let’s face it, for most of us price is something that we need to consider. When shopping online, it’s very beneficial to your wallet to be conscious of the price tag as it can (and actually does) vary considerably from site to site.

Place Not all corners of the internet are considered equal. When purchasing online, be sure to read about the retailer on their “about us” page and learn all you can. It can also be helpful to look up reviews in the major search engines, and spend some time surfing gear & equipment forums. Spending even just a few minutes to research can really tell you a lot about a company, and whether you want to spend your hard earned cash with them or not.

Promotion One of the greatest things about shopping on the internet is the deals. If you know where to look (Google, perhaps?) it is relatively easy to find a coupon code for your favorite MMA Store. These coupons can offer up a percentage off of your total order and sometimes even free shipping.

If you’re looking for a quality MMA Store, I highly recommend MMA Gear. With over 1,000 products and 50 top MMA brands to choose from – you’ll find the widest selection available coupled with great prices and excellent customer service.

Mike “Quick” Swick (born 19 June 1979) is an American professional mixed martial arts fighter.

He was a participant in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, a reality television series produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which is one of the reasons for his popularity. He was eliminated from the competition after a semi-final loss to Stephan Bonnar.

Since joining the ranks of the UFC, Mike has gone 5-0 and is considered on of the top Middleweight contenders in the UFC

MMAToday: How did you get involved in martial arts and MMA?

MS: I started in Tae-Kwon-Do at the age of 8. I have just been progressing from there every since…

MMAToday: Once you got started did you ever think you make it all the way to the UFC?

MS: I hoped! Ha-ha

MMAToday: How much did your appearance on TUF affect your training and your career?

MS: It made my career what it is today. It was the exposure that I needed and it made me train harder than ever.

MMAToday: What is it like going from fighting in smaller shows to fighting in the UFC? Were you nervous or did you feel you were ready to be there?

MS: It’s a big difference. The UFC is the Big Show. I felt ready.

MMAToday: Your first 4 fights in the UFC lasted a combined 6 minutes or so, what was the rush?

MS: I am just an aggressive fighter… ha-ha

MMAToday: How has your training been coming? And how is the hand?

MS: Training is going great! Hand is almost 100%. I am still sparring and doing mitt work, I am just still a little careful with it.

MMAToday: Can you give us a little insight into your training regimen?

MS: We train 2-3 times a day, 6 days a week.

MMAToday: Who are you currently training with?

MS: We have a great crew in now… As far as training, I have Lynn Schutz, Bob Cook, Dave Camarillo, and Javier Mendez. As far as teammates I got Fitch, Koscheck, Thomson, Prangley, Southworth, Fukada, plus a lot of great up and comers. Baroni should be back soon as well.

MMAToday: What motivated you to keep going and fighting?

MS: Wanting to be the best…

MMAToday: Your next opponent is Yushin Okami on March 3rd, anything special planned for that fight?

MS: This fight is not for sure. Nothing is signed. We are still working on it. I want this fight though.

MMAToday: Where do you see yourself in the Middleweight title picture if you are victorious there?

MS: I guess it depends on how I perform. I plan to perform at my best.

MMAToday: How well do you stack up against the current champ Anderson Silva?

MS: Wouldn’t mind finding out… ha-ha

MMAToday: Is there any other Middleweight out there in the UFC you would like to fight? And why?

MS: All of them!

MMAToday: Would you still like a rematch with Chris Leben?

MS: That fight will happen eventually and yes I will be happy when it does. After his performance against MacDonald though, it wouldn’t be a step up as far as my career goes. I want to fight top contenders right now.

MMAToday: What fights in your career are the most memorable to you?

MS: All my UFC fights have been very memorable.

MMAToday: How much longer do you have on your current contract?

MS: A little over a year…

MMAToday: Any possibilities of jumping ship to another promotion when it’s up?

MS: Nope.

MMAToday: Is there any fighter outside the UFC you would like to mix it up with?

MS: Haven’t thought about it really.

MMAToday: What fighters do you enjoy watching and why?

MS: GSP, Liddell, Couture, CroCop, Riggs, Loiseau, Silva, etc… All the exciting ones! I am a huge MMA fan myself.

MMAToday: What fighters do you look up to?

MS: Too many to list!

MMAToday: Who do think would be your toughest fight and why?

MS: Right now, I think Anderson Silva. It would be a good test for me.

MMAToday: What are your hobbies outside of MMA?

MS: Traveling. I love traveling! Whatever happens after you die happens, but this is the only earth we will ever have and I want to see it all. I like playing poker as well.

MMAToday: Who do you think the best over looked fighter in your weight class is?

MS: I am not sure. I don’t follow the forums too much to know who is favored more and stuff…

MMAToday: What do you think of Randy coming back?

MS: I am excited, I like him a lot.

MMAToday: What do you think of the UFC bringing in fighters from pride etc?

MS: I think they are just getting the best fighters from all over the world from all organizations and I think it’s great. I love competition.

MMAToday: If you could fight anyone who would it be? Why?

MS: Silva for the title. I want the belt! Ha-ha

MMAToday: Thank you very much for your time Mike, is there anything you would like to add here to your fans or anyone in general?

UFC and MMA fights are held in a cage, which is an eight sided, chain linked reinforced, heavily padded structure called the Octagon. As the sport has grown in popularity over the years, rules and regulations, according strict regulations concerning the type of fight gear that a cage fighter can wear during a match. The Octagons unique shape and structure have become associated with the UFC brand name and the UFCs parent company, Zuffa. The Octagon is featured regularly on television and mentioned in the national media, adding to its brand recognition, so closely associated with the MMA and UFC in fact that it has become an iconic symbol of the sport since it was first featured in UFC events in 1993.

The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, is currently recognized as the largest MMA promotion worldwide, is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada and owned by Zuffa LLC. The UFC began as a tournament to find the best fighters in the world, and was based on the Brazilian vale tudo fighting style.

Originally, it was known as a no holds barred fighting contest, which eventually led to accusations of human brutality. After criticism reduced the UFCs visibility was diminished by these accusations, the organization reformed itself and adapted strict, athletic commission sanctioned rules, remarketing itself as a legitimate sporting event.

This idea of a tournament geared towards finding the best world fighter was that of Art Davie, a Southern California based advertising executive who developed this concept while researching marital arts for a client. Davie went on to become the student of Rorion Gracie, a teacher of mixed martial arts. In 1992, Gracie, Davie, and John Milnus, a film director and screen writer, in addition to being a fellow Gracie student, developed a business plan to generate the initial capital required to start WOW Promotions in order to develop their tournament into a television franchise.

Fight gear for these events is restricted to regulation gloves and fight gear that includes only approved shorts, with no shoes or any type of foot covering allowed. Shirts, gis, and long pants, including gi pants, are also not allowed. The gloves are required because they enable fighters to increase the strength of their punches, while at the same time providing greater protection against injury and breakage.

In the early days, attire was unregulated, and many fighters opted for tight fitting athletic shorts or long, boxer trunks, and other wore tight wrestling suits and long pants. Royce Gracie, multi tournament champion, wore a jujitsu gi in all of his early UFC appearances. The regulations came after the move to take the UFC and the MMA fighting style into the mainstream.

Shadow boxing is very often looked at as just a warm up before the actual boxing workout. Shadow boxing no doubt serves to warm up and prepare the body for the upcoming workout session.More importantly though, shadow boxing helps you to groove the skills you have been taught by your boxing training coach in your boxing training workouts. Shadow boxing also serves as a tool to hone your own unique fighting style. If you think shadow boxing just about throwing punches to break a sweat, you’re going about it the wrong way.

When you’re shadow boxing, It is best to shadow box in front of a mirror where you can monitor your technique that has been taught to you. I often say… the mirror doesn’t lie. Once you know what to look for, it’s impossible to have bad technique in front of the mirror! Unless of course you just don’t care or aren’t really focusing and putting your all into it. It’s a very important time to groove the skills your trainer has been teaching you. Skill retention is a lot better when you shadow box in front of the mirror grooving good skill.

If you really focus on what you’re doing while shadow boxing, progression is heightened. Your boxing coach won’t have to yell at you so much to stop dropping your hands when you’re working the bags. He will be very pleased to see your fast progression due to your commitment of solid technique when shadow boxing. Boxers can so all they want that they have been putting in the extra work shadow boxing, good technique will be the telling sign and truth to the coach that the fighter has indeed been putting in the work.

Great fighters will tell you that when they shadow box and move around they envision real situations that may come up in the ring. They envision having an opponent in front of them punching back and moving. From offensive combos, to defensive tactics, all is covered. Boxers are continually focusing focusing on what an opponent can possibly do while shadow boxing. That is why some boxing coaches call shadow boxing shadow sparring. It looks like the fighter is boxing an invisible opponent.

Look at an experienced fighters body language and eyes when doing this. It shows they are in a different world. Indeed they are, a world where they see themselves dominating. You wonder why these fighters get so good? Because they see themselves doing it first. The mind can’t tell the difference from something it is experiencing or imagining. That’s why this secret is so important to apply. Your boxing performance will improve at a rare you never thought possible when you shadow boxing this way in your boxing training workouts.

Now think about that the next time you shadow box or shadow spar.

After a string of victories coming from the United States, as well as other countries in the west like Brazil and Canada, the eastern fighters of UFC are now attempting to bounce back from their defeat. Among the eastern players, the Japanese fighters have captured the attention of UFC thirsty aficionados with their equally topnotch fighting expertise.

UFC or Ultimate Fighting Championship is a United States-based mixed martial arts organization. It showcases numerous tournaments exhibiting various fighters from different countries, having different fighting techniques. And despite having a few rules, the UFC tournaments are popularly known for being a “no holds barred” fighting competition, entailing a lot of violence and brutality.

The upcoming UFC Fight Night 9, which is scheduled to commence on April 5 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, will feature previous Japanese fighters who have not been triumphant in their initial participation with UFC. Among the Japanese participants are Keita Nakamura, who is bound to fight Drew Ficket in the welterweight bout, Naoyuki Kotani, who is up against Thiago Tavares in the lightweight bout, Kuniyoshi Hironaka, who is scheduled to combat Forrest Petz in the welterweight bout, and Dokonjonosuke Mishima who is up against Kenny Florian in the lightweight bout as the main event. Another main event will showcase Joe Stevenson vs. Melvin Guillard, which is also in the lightweight bout. The much-awaited competition will be broadcast live on Spike TV.

UFC Fight Night 9 is indeed about second chances. With the inclusion of the hefty fighters from Japan, it will certainly make the competition more interesting. For Kotani, this is another opportunity to redeem himself from his unsuccessful debut in UFC. But being a much-admired veteran with fierce fighting skills, a lot of fans are rooting for his comeback, as well as the rest of the Japanese fighters.
