Over the last 3-4 years Boxing’s mantle as the number one ‘fight’ sport has come under serious threat from Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and in particular the Dana White lead Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Ultra slick presentations, clever marketing and the ability to produce the fights which fans yearn to see, has seen the UFC explode in the United States. The phenomenon is now actively spreading across Canada, Europe and the rest of the World. States and countries who once banned MMA events as ‘too brutal’ are now openly promoting them in their top stadia and venues. The UFC Events always have sell-out crowds regardless of the venue enormity, and this has continued as the bandwagon has spread to countries such as the UK and Ireland. Other MMA Organisations, such as Pride (Japan) and Affliction also gain huge crowds for their events. All this is occurring against the back-drop of a global recession!

On the other hand, Boxing has been a mainstream populous sport for in excess on 100 years. Legends such as Muhammed Ali, Marvellous Marvin Hagler, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson (to name a few) are household names amongst most people from both sides of the Atlantic. Boxing, celebrity and glamour have gone ‘hand in hand’ for decades. Watch re-runs of Mike Tyson fights from the 90’s on YouTube and try and spot the non-celebrities ringside - it’s very difficult! With such celebrity links comes huge revenues - something which top-level fighters have, in many instances, capitalised upon to become extremely wealthy, along with their promoters. However, this vast influx of celebrity and wealth appears to have come at a costly price for the noble art of boxing. With such money and prestige available to ‘World Champion’s’, every promoter wanted a champ. This has led to the increased number of weight divisions (very small variance between the weights) and most damagingly the introduction of the numerous ‘alphabet’ World Titles. The original and respected boxing organisations such as the WBC, WBA, IBF have dramatically swelled with the forming of the WBO and IBO, followed by such non-entity belts as the WBU. All this has led to numerous World Champions at each weight class. Whilst it is now commonly acknowledged that it is the fighter who ‘makes the belt’ (The Ring Belt is ultimately decided upon in this way), the reluctance of organisations to interlink means many ‘top’ fights never occur. Combine this with the reluctance of promoters / fighters to risk their status as ‘World Champ’ for anything less that an ‘out of this world payday’ and you the present scenario.

Whilst there are always exceptions to the rule, as Ricky Hatton and PBF recently proved, it is too often the case that the best fighters don’t ever meet in the ring. This is not the case in MMA, where every event seems to provide at least one fight between a weight divisions top two. There are also less weight divisions, and, unlike boxing, there never seems to be a mis-match simply to ‘pad’ a fighter’s record. The glamour / celebrity side of the sports is also turning in MMA’s favour (and that’s not referring to Tito Ortiz’s partner!). Celebrities such as Paris Hilton are common place at UFC events, Donald Trump actively promotes events in his venues whilst the Goldenboy of Boxing, Oscar Del Hoya, was recently ecstatically cheering ringside at the Affliction main event of Fedor v Arloski (he had a business interest in that event).

It appears that MMA is clearly challenging Boxing’s supremacy like it has never been challenged before. Many fans suggest the sports are as different as Football is to Rugby, but their audience catchment groups most definitely overlap. If MMA, and the UFC in particular, continue to ‘run their business’ and improve as they have in recent years they have a big future. They should take a cautious note of what has happened to boxing in recent years and learn from their mistakes. On a ‘flip-side’, maybe boxing and it’s bosses should ‘go-back to basics’, benchmark the MMA success formula and re-invent their brand accordingly. Only time will tell.

My background is very sport and fitness orinetated, not in my profession but in my lifestyle. I have been a keen sports player since I was ‘knee high to a grasshopper’ and a gym member since college. However, I honestly believe I have never felt fitter than I do at present, at the age of 32 years, 4 months and 8 days! My favourite sports include football, boxing and MMA.

I have recently become involved in http://www.competitiveurge.com/ , a social networking site with a difference - it actively encourages and promotes physical participation. Whilst the site is only in it’s infancy in terms of functionality and useability, I believe in the concept 100% and am extremely excited by the future plans for it. Hope you enjoy.

If you’re not already internet savvy, shopping online for MMA Clothing and Fight Gear can be an overwhelming process. Fortunately though, it doesn’t have to be. I have written this guide to help ease you through the process of selecting the right online MMA retailer to shop with the first time, so that your online shopping experience is a good one.

Product Choose an online store with a wide selection of product. If you’re like me, you don’t want to have to shop at three different online stores to find everything that you want. I like to pick a major retailer (or two maximum) and stick with them throughout the purchasing process.

Price Let’s face it, for most of us price is something that we need to consider. When shopping online, it’s very beneficial to your wallet to be conscious of the price tag as it can (and actually does) vary considerably from site to site.

Place Not all corners of the internet are considered equal. When purchasing online, be sure to read about the retailer on their “about us” page and learn all you can. It can also be helpful to look up reviews in the major search engines, and spend some time surfing gear & equipment forums. Spending even just a few minutes to research can really tell you a lot about a company, and whether you want to spend your hard earned cash with them or not.

Promotion One of the greatest things about shopping on the internet is the deals. If you know where to look (Google, perhaps?) it is relatively easy to find a coupon code for your favorite MMA Store. These coupons can offer up a percentage off of your total order and sometimes even free shipping.

If you’re looking for a quality MMA Store, I highly recommend MMA Gear. With over 1,000 products and 50 top MMA brands to choose from – you’ll find the widest selection available coupled with great prices and excellent customer service.

There are lots of different types of activities which people engage in to keep fit. One of these activities is that of martial arts. You will find that there are many different versions of martial arts which you can try out. One of these is that of MMA or mixed martial arts as it is also called. In this branch of the martial arts there are also different forms involved.

One of these versions of MMA is called kick boxing. In kick boxing you will find that the contestants are trained to use their feet and hands. The MMA is one of the more interesting martial arts which you can look into. As it is more physical in many ways than the other martial arts you should look into the different options which are available.

As with any type of martial arts you will need to have a qualified teacher show you the intricacies of MMA. When you first decide to learn one of the MMA fighting styles it is important that you take the time that is needed to develop your style of fighting. This is an area that you should be prepared to spend quite a bit of time in.

As the main goal of MMA or that of any martial arts is to learn discipline while you are learning the intricacies of your particular fighting style you need to hone your skills. As you become more proficient in the different forms of martial arts which are needed for your style of MMA you will find that you are capable of defending yourself as well as taking the offensive when the time comes.

Now you will need to understand that even the MMA has competitions where contests from different schools of fighting can see how well they have learned their subject. These competitions are kept in the bounds of good sportsmanship. Just as these competitions foster a sense of learning there are professional grade MMA competitions.

In these tournaments you will be facing a variety of opponents. For the people who prefer to go through with this form of fighting it is very important that you don’t misjudge the strengths or weaknesses of the many contestants. These competitions are one of the many ways that the attention of martial arts fans can be brought to MMA.

With the enthusiasm for MMA growing every day you can be sure that at some point in time this branch of martial arts will be as popular and well known as karate or Kung Fu.

If you love mixed martial arts and can not seem to watch enough of cage fights, chances are you already own at least one piece of MMA apparel. These days, mixed martial arts are everywhere. There was a reality television show dedicated to the sport, which one MMA clothing company even sponsored. The sales of that particular brand went through the roof, as famous fighters like Chuck Liddell made appearances wearing that specific brand of MMA apparel. And even in the fights the contenders were wearing it!

The one thing you should know about MMA apparel is that different brands and styles are not created equal. Some MMA clothing brands are high quality through and through, made out of only the best fabrics and stitched together in a way that the seams will never fall apart. Before spending a lot of money on Mixed Martial Arts apparel, you should inspect the craftsmanship of the clothes. Even if the MMA gear is expensive, that does not necessarily mean that the clothes are high quality.

Another thing to look for in MMA clothing is a spandex content. Most of the clothes that fighters wear are made out of fabrics like nylon and cotton, specifically in blends that are known to wick away sweat. Fabrics with a little bit of spandex in them will move with you, instead of against you. This translates to a good fit that keeps it close to your body. As you probably know, no professional fighter enters the ring with loose fitting clothes.

One of the other advantages to seeking out MMA apparel with a little bit of spandex is the fact that cotton and spandex blends are less likely to tear. Plus, with the stretch that spandex offers, it keeps the clothing from cutting into your skin and becoming uncomfortable. From working out to actually fighting in a cage match, the last thing you really want to be worrying about is how uncomfortable your shorts are.

The final thing you should consider when deciding which brands of MMA gear to invest in is where the clothes are actually made. When you buy MMA clothing that is made in America, you know that your purchase will help to stimulate the American economy. Additionally, there is something to be said for knowing for sure that your Mixed Martial Arts apparel was not constructed in a third world country by young children.

MMA is a sport that requires peak physical condition in all realms. This sport requires you to push, pull, kick, punch, move around, wrestle, manipulate your opponent, and keep your hands up all while being completely exhausted. You need great aerobic conditioning in order to recover while in between rounds and to ensure you are capable of going the distance. You also need anaerobic conditioning to ensure your muscles are capable of continuing the fight once all aerobic energy systems are depleted. Muscular endurance and strength will help to make sure that you are imposing your will on your opponent and are capable of doing so for a prolonged period of time. All in all you need to be in great physical shape.

So how does all this translate to the average Joe? Well better health of course, prolonged life, and not to mention looking great naked in most cases. Day to day chores that require physical effort are much easier and less taxing when your body is in top physical form. Not only will you be able to do more and not become tired as quickly, but having this new physical being gives you improved self confidence and helps you better cope with stress.

Training for an MMA fight requires a program designed to benefit all attributes mentioned above. There is a vast difference between training professionally for MMA and training for amateur bouts. For the average person looking to get in shape, following a program similar to that of an MMA gladiator will achieve great results.

A typical training week involves days of strength training, circuit workouts for muscular endurance and anaerobic conditioning, aerobic conditioning, and of course martial arts instruction - which also has an aerobic benefit.

Strength training days are usually very few when preparing for a fight, however in off time when trying to put on mass the number of days increases as well the type of workout changes. Strength training occurs very little, usually only once or twice a week, but lifts near maximal weight with low volume and greater rest periods. When training for hypertrophy, reps usualy stay in the 6 to 8 range and weight near 80% of your one rep maximum.

Aerobic conditioning typically occurs three or more times per week. For aerobic exercises an MMA athlete will find great results in running long distances, jumping rope and spending a lengthy amount of time doing bag work.

Anearobic conditioning is completed by exerting maximul force in short bursts for one to three minutes followed by three to nine minute periods of rest. The effort produced is maximal or near maximal and involve generally explosive movements.

Along with the rise in fame of fighters like Chuck Leddell, Kimbo Slice, Brock Lesnar and Gina Carano there has been a rise in MMA merchandise and with MMA fight gear. Companies like UFC have adopted the sales philosophy of companies like WWE and TNA by marketing the athletes on posters T-shirts and other MMA inspired apparel which is something that professional boxing has never fallen in line with. The world of MMA is commercial success in part due to smart marketing and flooding the market with modern day worriers to give the fans a face to go with the name brand and a T-Shirt to support their favorite fighters! Where ever you go you’re bound to see someone wearing shirt expressing their admiration for their favorite fighter, team and even league.

During the infancy of MMA there were very few companies willing to put their name alongside a brutal sport but today there are literally dozens of companies out there like American Fighter, Bloody knuckles, Sinister and MMA pro sports gear signing deals with clubs, leagues and fighters in efforts to secure their name in the world of MMA and with the popularity of “walk out shirts” it’s a competitive market to secure a sport to be seen during the main event. MMA apparel has truly become a giant market place. With the meteoric rise of the industry there has been an equal rise in the number of people turning their interests to getting into the ring to see how they measure up against other disciplines of fighting. Mixed martial arts gives an individual fighter the opportunity to shine against any other style and any other fighter. Since there are so many different types of martial arts, each fighter has a different aptitude for each specific art and the various combos of skill make for a very exciting fight.

Another smart move for MMA was to define their own style by developing their own in-ring gear like lighter gloves that differ from boxing, in-ring fighting shorts that also differ from boxing which allows more room for attacking the abdomen. Certain things remain the same though like mouth guards and even those famous sweat suits that you routinely see fighters on the hit series “ultimate fighter” wearing to drop pounds before a weigh in.

If you are a fan or a fighter looking to have fans it’s a new dawn for anyone interested in MMA and there is a world of gear out there for you to support your favorites or to hone your craft.

MMA Expert Advice, Projections and Odds
Betting on MMA is by far the hottest sport to bet on. The opportunity to win big money is real if you can find the right fight to bet on. The problem is the people who are betting on these fights don’t know a lot about the sport and are wasting easy ways to earn some extra cash. Here is our Mixed Martial Arts Guide to help you WIN BIG on all MMA events such as UFC, WEC, HD NET and more.
Breaking Down The Mixed Martial Arts Betting Odds
MMA odds are just like any other odds to any other sporting events. There are things that you will usually see when looking at odds for a MMA fight.
UFC 96 Rampage Jackson vs Keith Jardine

Money Line Submission: Knockout Over Under Decision
Jackson -400 Jackson +200 Jackson -100 Over 1.5 +200 Jackson +200
Jardine +250 Jardine +500 Jardine +600 Under 1.5 -105 Jardine +850

MMA ODDS AND MATCHUPS
Money Lines- The Money line odds are there to see who is favored and who the underdog is. Here is an example of a fight at UFC 96. Rampage Jackson is favored -400. This means that you will have to bet $400 to win $100. For every $400 you lay out you will win a $100 on a victory. Let’s say you want to risk $1200 and you win you will receive $300 profit. We will now look at the underdog side. Keith Jardine’s odds are at +250. This means for every $100 you bet you will receive back $250 on a victory. You bet $200 you will win $500 profit. Betting on the money line means that the fighter just has to win it does not matter in what fashion he does it in.
Money lines are not the only thing that you can bet on. You can bet on props as well. Things like Submission Odds Knockout Odds and Over Under Rounds and Decision of the fight.
Rampage Jardine Over Under 1.5 Rounds. Here are the odds above of the over under distance of the fight. The same betting rule applies from above. You are simply betting if the fight will go into the second round. You take the over and goes into the second round then you are a winner.
Submission Odds and Knockout Odds work the same way but there lies a major confusion with this. There are many instances in fights where the referee may stop the fight. When he does so, it can be for one of two reasons. The fighter has either been submitted or the fighter is taking too much punishment and will have to step in and stop it which is also known as a TKO Technical Knock Out, the same as a Knockout.
There are factors should a fight go to a decision. In this case it is a non title fight so it will be after three rounds. The judges will then score the fighter and the winner will be named. If you bet $100 on Jardine to win by decision and he does so you will win $850 for every $100 you bet.
Here are some tips that you want to look at when deciding on who to bet on.
1. There is no such thing as a sure thing. Listen, this is a fight and no matter how big of a favorite a fighter is it is a fight and anything can happen. Think back to when George St Pierre got knocked out by Matt Serra. This is why MMA is so great upsets happen all the time!
2. Look for winning streaks. The best thing for a fighter is confidence if he has a nice win streak going then his confidence is going to be at a all time high.
3. Look where the fight is taking place. George St Pierre got to fight in his hometown of Canada last spring. The entire arena was filled with his fan base. It makes it a lot easier and gives you a lot more confidence when you have thousands of fans screaming your name.
4. Look at past fights. Did the two fighters fight before? Just because they haven’t matched up in the UFC does not mean they have not gone toe to toe in another organization. Remember many of these UFC fighters have fought in the Pride for years before coming to the UFC. See if the two have matched up before and see what the results were.
5. Injury- Do your research many times these fighters obtain injuries due to their tough training regiment. If a fighter has been battling injuries you might want to go the other way.
6. Know the odds. Many times when the lines first come out the lines will change drastically. Make sure you get the best price on your pick Check the lines often and see if your fighter is getting better odds.

Mixed Martial Arts is a sport that requires an athlete to be in great physical strenght. Throwing powerful strikes, and being able to manipulate your opponent’s position requires tremendous physical strength and endurance. Strength training for MMA not only involves training the muscles to produce greater effort, but also to produce that effort longer under extreme physiological conditions.

Even if you are not a mixed martial arts compettitor, training like one will have drastic beneficial effects on your body and health. We all know great cardio reduces the stresses on our heart, and having power allows us to complete physical tasks easier… But the one benefit that will be most rewarding, is looking great naked.

This workout will push you beyond your limits, and make you pray to God that it will end soon. Many athletes complete something similar to this, but as their caliber of physical conditioning increases, so does the workload they undertake with each workout.

This workout will hit all major muscle groups and should be completed about two or three times a week allowing two full days of recovery in between each session. Not only will you be getting a strength workout, but you will also be training your muscles to produce effort longer, and to push through with high levels of lactic acid present.

We will be doing 3 circuits total with 3 minutes rest after each circuit. Each exercise in the circuit is timed and your goal is to complete as many reps as possible in the alotted time. There is no rest between exercises, after one station you must move immediately to the next.

Find a weight that you can move with moderate ease, this is after all a strength training exercise and pushing a light weight will have little effect on strength gains.

Keep a log book of how many reps you completed for each exercise in the time limit, then on your next workout, try to smash that record. Always look to achieve a new personal best every time you’re in the gym.

Alright without further delay, here it is:

1 Front Squats - 1 Minute 30 Seconds

2 Military Press - 1 Minute 30 Seconds

3 Bench Press - 1 Minute 30 Seconds 4 Seated Rows - 1 Minute 30 Seconds

5 Clean and Jerk - 1 Minute 30 Seconds

After your first circuit rest three minutes, then repeat.

Like I said, this workout is hell, but the feeling of accomplishing this will give you an awesome high, you will see major improvements in strength and muscular endurance doing workouts similar to this.

MMA is considered a sport and it is derived from a variety of martial arts and fighting techniques. It is a full contact combat sport that is seen by many as rather brutal. Both traditional martial arts techniques and non-traditional ones are used in competitions that are held around the world.

Everyday people are taking up the sport of mixed martial arts. Learning mixed martial arts helps people focus their mental energy and channel it in order to defend themselves. Intense practice is needed to master any mixed martial art. However, in order to properly learn it, a person must get the proper MMA equipment for the particular style they chose to learn. This essentially begins with the proper clothing.

There is different MMA equipment that fighters use help prevent injuries and promote their safety. The categories range from gloves to mouth guards and helmets. When it comes to choosing MMA gloves, they are available in open palm and closed palm styles. The gloves are very popular because they do not interfere with flexibility or grip. The focus mitt is also a very important piece of MMA equipment. The mitts are comfortably curved to fit properly, which also prevents hand cramps.

Most MMA fighters will agree that the most critical piece of MMA equipment that must be worn is the mouth guard. A mouth guard not only protects your teeth and mouth, but wearing a mouth guard properly will also prevent you from suffering a concussion with a blow to the teeth.

Of course, protection during stand up training and fighting is a must. The MMA equipment needed are helmets that are made from thick, rubbery material. These types of helmets are heavier and more durable and the protection they provide is stellar.

Remember, different forms of mixed martial arts require different kinds of MMA equipment. However, the focus should always be on the free movement of the person who is wearing the equipment. Clothing and MMA equipment designed for mixed martial arts is made to provide protection to vital organs as well as complete mobility to the wearer. This makes finding the proper MMA equipment vital to being able to learn any type of mixed marital art properly.

Once you have the basic MMA equipment purchased you can rest easy knowing you will be properly protected when you begin your training. Your friends and family may feel better too, knowing you will be protected!
